Q&A: AT&T prepaid long distance problems?

Question by ItsBitzo: AT&T prepaid long distance problems?
Anybody tried to buy one of those virtual prepaid long distance cards from the AT&T website??

For the last 2 days I’ve been trying to buy one, but they send me an email saying my request has been declined & I should call my credit card company. I know the problem is not with my credit card…. I have not maxed it out or anything like that. I don’t why I can’t buy a simple long distance card.

Any ideas??

    Absolutely.

When I was in Britain I was paying about 1.5 cents per minute to call my wife in San Francisco. She was paying about 11 cents per minute to call me!

When we moved to Las Vegas I spent about an hour and forty minutes on the phone with Sprint while the guy tried to sell me a whole package of ‘extras’. The biggest one was the long distance package. It’s much cheaper to go through a third party or to buy prepaid long distance cards, or there is even a long list of ’10 10′ numbers that actually cost less than your carrier but require no contract so cost more than a third party deal or a card.

The whole model of long distance (and this refers to city to city also — not just international) is something of a rip-off in the United States.

Cell phones are not practical for long distance/international calls. One would need to obtain a second mortgage before making the call! If you have a prepaid phone then it will probably allow the call but your minutes would probably last seconds!

San Diego is serviced by AT&T and Sprint as well as others. Cell coverage is provided by Nextel, Cingular and Verizon.
