International Phone Card

The international phone card has saved many international travelers and immigrants thousands of dollars. The international phone card has extremely cheap rates that allow you to stay in touch with friends and family.

Years ago, calling overseas was a major event. It was not as easy as picking up the phone and dialing but instead it was done with the help of a live operator and the costs were enormous. Well, times have changed and customers are able to call internationally with no problem. It is as easy as dialing the number from any phone, anywhere. For immigrants, the international prepaid phone card allows new migrants to phone relatives for cents on the dollar.

The downside is the amount of options available to people. Options are usually a good thing but in the world of phone cards, it has created a lot of confusion. Don’t be scammed by a card service that has hidden fees or stipulations on what type of phone you use. Do some research online on the phone card service. The website will offer a “contact us” link that will usually offer a toll free number. Call and ask any questions you may have and ask about fees.

Here’s my shortlist of international phone card checks when shopping for a card.
1. How long has the company been in business? You can check online and if the company has been in business for years that is a good sign. These company that are new and seem too good to be true, usually are. Stay away from them.
2. Can the company be contacted? This is important. If you need a copy of your phone records for immigration purposes and you can’t even contact the company, you are in trouble. Call the company before hand and know that they are easy to get in contact with. Ask if you can get copies of the phone card records and how long will it take to receive them.
3. Customer service was touched on in the previous point. Being able to talk to a real live person when you require assistance makes such a big difference.
4. Can the card be typed up over the phone? Being able to dial a central number when you haven’t got internet access is another plus.
5. Check for hidden fees… these can eat away your payments in no time. Avoid them when you can.

I hope this list helps you in your journey to finding the perfect international phone card. Each of these points is important and should be addressed before hand. You will be on your way to calling worry free internationally in no time. When you find a phone card company that meets your needs, stick with it and resist the urge to change when a cheaper company comes around. They may be cheaper at first but the rates could change, leaving you with a higher cost. Sometimes, cheaper is definitely not better!
