Question by DRSOGR: Will I be charged for the call at the hotel if I use a calling card?
I am going to the middle of knowhere for 2 weeks. I did some research and the area is roaming through my cell phone. Looking at the hotel online, it says that local calls are free for up to 30 minutes. Would a calling card constitute the same type of thing? As it would be like a 1-800 number?

Shouldn’t have to pay the hotel anything but then again they may have rules and charges that they want to charge anyway. When in doubt…ask before making the call.

Like everywhere else, it’s getting harder to find pay phones away from airports and train stations. Fortunately, there’s little of the vandalism aimed at North American pay phones.

How much time your ¥10 gets you depends on distance. For local calls, it’s one minute—or portion thereof. (Subscriber lines get three minutes.)

This model takes &yen100 coins, but does not give change.

It also accepts prepaid cards—a decades-old (1982) solution to the problem of collecting all those ¥10 coins.

According to the Japanese Wikipedia article:
    • This model is the MC-3PNC for both stands (here) and phone booths. It’s connected to an analog line.
    • These card telephones debuted in December 1982.
    • Their yellow predecessors, which accepted ¥100 coins, but not cards, debuted in 1972.
    • Their digital (ISDN) successors are grey. I’ve only ever seen them in and around train stations. I assume because they’re much more expensive. Maybe when the green ones wear out…
