Alone at the Taj
Calling Card

This was a very nice and scary-mysterious man. When he looked at me he twisted his head around like a puppy trying to cast an ancient spell on me. No puppy has ever done that to me, so you can imagine my confusion.

We sat around and watched the sunset at the Taj together and I asked if I could take his picture. After I while I rubbed my House-like stubble since it has been a few days since I shaved. I asked him if he liked my beard. He gave a grunt in response that was either a laugh or a grunt of general disgust at the state of my beard.

I usually don’t use my flash, but this case called for a bit of fill light. I aimed my SB-800 straight into the air and used the white card off the top to reflect, while setting the EV to -2/3, so as to not over-power his face. As for the other settings, the exposure bias was -2 EV, shutter speed 1/125, focal length at 31mm, and the ap at f/4. The background is HDR, as are his robes. As with many of my photos, that does not mean those bits are 100% HDR! These are probably on the scale of 10-25% HDR in this case.
So much of my work is landscape and architecture-related. So I rarely use the flash in those conditions. I think using natural light is the way to go, and, as you know by now, with HDR, you can eek out every little morsel of light that is bouncing around the scene. However, I still carry my flash almost everywhere because I do very much enjoy taking photos of people.

Mr. Octopus
Calling Card

Carved in an angry mood with dull gouges, he can barely be called a stamp because he is 7" long, he is almost more of a relief print in rubber. I do like him though and think he came out pretty good.

I think I might print him on notebooks or cards and try to sell them on etsy.

…when I feel better.

VALUE the Greyhound needs your help!!
    Calling Card

"Value" is Brigitte Junga’s rescue greyhound, who caught her tail in a door on December 14, 2009 and had to go to the vet. Now there are further complications following the surgery. Her owner is a sweet young girl on disability who loves and needs this dog. She doesn’t have much money at best of times, and this is an impossible debt for her. Please read their story below.

If you can spare an extra . or so, please consider donating any amount, no matter how small, to help reduce her vet bills. Donations to the vet bill of ‘Value" the greyhound (owner Brigitte Junga), can be made DIRECTLY TO THE VET – QUEEN WEST ANIMAL HOSPITAL at 923 Queen St. Toronto Canada, in person or over the Phone, number is (416) 815-8387 and they accept credit cards (naturally, they’re vets…)

    Thank-you!
One of Brigitte and Value’s friends.

PS As of January 7, 2010 Val has now been scheduled for a THIRD operation on her tail… another ,200. to add to the bill. Unbelievable.

    These are Brigitte’s Facebook updates.

    SO:

i forgot to tell on faceboof that Val is getting only 2 inches of tail removed. Some people thought it was the whole thing! So this makes me feel a bit lucky.

Val goes under tomorrow am. She’s at Queen West (which is right near Capsule on queen). I decided that since i’m already spending a bagillion dollars, I might as well have her rotting teeth extracted. This made sense to me since it’s stressful to anesthetize a greyhounds, and since it will actually cost less to do it all at once.

    **********22.00***********

Merry Christmas to me. At least my doggy is okay. God Bless that her life isn’t in danger!

And to pals who tried to help me find a good vet: I think I officially like the Queen West hospital. they discounted their prices for me since I’m on disability, and I called around to 4 other vets (the one near church and bloor, bathurst and dupont, parkdale and bluecross) and all of those places quoted me a higher price. The only way it would have been cheaper is if I went to bluecross initially (which wasn’t an option) and even then, it would have only been a tiny bit cheaper.

So, fingers crossed for baby snickeroo tomorrow!

    thanks guys

    VALUE FIASCO update

    …so:

I went to get Val yesterday. I had my meeting with the vet about how to care for her, when to give meds, etc, then out comes Val to meet me in the waiting area. She whaps her tail against the wall or something, and blood spews everywhere! Over the reception desk, the chairs, the message board -everything! So they took her back to re bandage. After 15 minutes, Dr. Chong tells me she’s split her stitches and broken a vein. I had to leave, and they had to put her under and do the surgery again.

    It gets worse:

I got a call that evening, saying the surgery went well BUTTTT…. when they put her under, she had a sort of fit. Which is quite rare, but does sometimes happen. This caused her to thrash about uncontrollably, and she injured both of her legs. Bad enough that she now has 6 stitches on her legs!

    It gets worse:

They are now quite concerned that Val has the doggy version of hemophilia. This clotting disorder is such a cause for concern that they recommended that Val’s off-leash lifestyle come to an end forever (how could I do that????) so as to reduce her risk of harm.

    It gets worse:

Today Meiron and I went to pick her up, and yes, once again, the geyser bursts!. This time they were able to wrap her up good enough that I finally got to take her home.

But now I’ve been told that the clotting disease test is something that is less than optional for her well being.

As you know, the costs for Val’s care has been enough to cover the deposit on a small home in some places! It’s out of control. So here’s what I’m asking:

If everyone I know could donate _____.00_____ measly dollars to Val’s cause, I would be able to cover the cost of Val’s hemophilia test. Tis’ the season, right? And there’s no gift Val would like more.

her vet is QUEEN WEST ANIMAL HOSPITAL at 923 Queen. that’s directly across from Trinity Bellwoods park. The number is (416) 815-8387. Could you drop by, or call in (they accept credit card donations over the phone), and donate 4 dollars for VALUE?

I thank you more than you could know. I am sad. And exhausted.

    (Message from Dawn One-
I personally think that vet bills are becoming out of control. If you are poor or under employed, this can be a deterrent to caring properly for your animal, or a financial disaster should a medical emergency affect your pet. Some say that if you can’t afford a pet, you shouldn’t have one. They say the same for children, though MOST people on this planet are born into impoverished circumstances. If money were the criteria, only rich people would be allowed to have pets, as vet care and the debt they incur is beyond the scope of most people I know. The lonely, poor and disabled often have more time and love to give to an animal, and emotionally benefit from their pets. Should they and their animals be denied this relationship because vets continually overcharge? Value’s owner wasn’t originally on disability when she first got her pet, but her circumstances have since changed. This can happen to any one of us. )

    dusk falls upon san leandro
    Calling Card

After a super hot day, w/ temps. averaging in the mid-70′s, we emerge from the salon, met by a slight chill and dusk, as it just begins to fall upon San Leandro on MacArthur Blvd. aka the Estudillo Heights neighborhood, in the up and coming trendy retail spot in our little city. We have another cool district called Bancroft, and that neighborhood and Estudillo Heights will now be my new market for my next photography show and sale of my "Pixie’s Greeetings" greeting card line. Down the street behind me, and past the "neighborhood liquor store", so quaint, there are little businesses dotted along MacArthur Blvd., and my hair salon is one of them, and where I will have my next show installed. That’s a big thing in the East Bay, hair salon’s that double as art galleries. Even the awesome nail salon next door has a gallery of B&W portraits from a local artist showing at this time. I took this shot as part of my work for my Urban Photog. class, but I also took it because the lighting was so nice, and complimented this building, despite it being a Liquor Store, it is a centerpoint of the neighborhood, beloved by their loyal patrons and outsiders alike, and therefore, a necessary photo. The old neon sign is nostalgic. This is also, I hope, an example of "line & point" and the "Rule of 3rds" for my Art & Design course.
