you can dial long distance directly by dialing the area code and telephone number preceded by 1
ex. 1-212-555-1212

to call internationally then you need to dial the country code to the location that you are calling etc.
this website will help provide you with instructions on how to complete a direct dialed international call from any country to any other country (along with any access or country codes that are required to dial) http://www.howtocallabroad.com/

Question by DRSOGR: Will I be charged for the call at the hotel if I use a calling card?
I am going to the middle of knowhere for 2 weeks. I did some research and the area is roaming through my cell phone. Looking at the hotel online, it says that local calls are free for up to 30 minutes. Would a calling card constitute the same type of thing? As it would be like a 1-800 number?

Shouldn’t have to pay the hotel anything but then again they may have rules and charges that they want to charge anyway. When in doubt…ask before making the call.
